- don’t include too many specific details here, ie maybe leave out nonprofit and speak more generally like important infrastructure developments , with more details explained in the proposal
at this week’s town hall, we compared the 4 week break with shorter breaks and formed consensus that four weeks makes sense. After the event I realized i forgot to ask one important question. would it make sense to take a longer break?
so i’ve made 3 proposals. i am happy to go with 4 week break returning on april 30th as we discussed. however, also would be happy to go longer, and if it was solely up to me then my preference would prob be for 5 or 6 week break, with ability to have council approve proposal for flexiiblity sooner (ie opt out of longer break, rather than opt in).
there seemed to be strong support for 4 week break, and previous discussions tadas mentioned advantages of shorter break, so im happy to go with 4 week break. but worth considering these proposals.
some rationale that may support longer break
- i often feel like not enough time for breaks, still need to respond to friends and colleagues etc.
- with Optimism Fractal approved return, then later realized it wasnt necessary - unlike OF, EF will 100% return , but there is lesson that we sometimes rush into scheduling events when not necessary, and deliberating length and extending break more may be helpful
- respect games will provide much more benefit when the infra is in place, ie nonprofit and agents to help facilitate
- not 100% sure that infra will be ready by april 30th, and the odds increase that it will be ready by May 4th or 11th
- we have proven ability to maintain momentum with longer breaks in the past, and additional community gatherings mentioned plus flexibility clause provide optionality and touchpoints
- end of season break would be around july 9 or 23 to september if we do two month summer break. but to me it seems like a 6 week break now and 6 week break in summer would be better than 4 weeks now and 8 weeks in summer break, for example. infra needs are higher priority now with nonprofit, etc
- either way we may need to take longer break for winter break and this amount of break would set us up for clean half season 13 in 2026.
some rationale that may support a shorter break:
- having consistent town halls can reduce the need for manual scheduling of outside calls
- more recorded content provides educational repository (much better than private unrecorded calls for knowledge dissemination)
- consistent respect games provides more measurements of contributions and onboarding opportunities (though onboarding is not a top priority now)
- more continuity and momentum
- testing and collaborative spec driven development of important apps
